“Technology has always changed economic and social structures.
Now, a self-sufficient Artificial Intelligence is driving a relentless progress that is bound to deeply modify our professional, social and relational habits…
We are in the midst of what will be remembered as the great historical leap of the dawn of the third millennium. We must make sure that the revolution we are experiencing remains human. Meaning that it must stay within the bounds of a traditional civilisation, whose irreplaceable pillar is the human being and their dignity.”[1]
With these words, Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, addressed his fellow citizens in his end-of-year message.
In the book Umano, poco umano[2] (Human, Scarcely Human)[3] by Crippa and Girgenti, there is a quotation from Diego Calvanese, an engineer and professor at the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology at the Free University of Bolzano, one of the leading experts on AI[4], in which he states:
“With AI I ask a question and I will receive an unpredictable answer. This is a conversation. Creativity and unpredictability are the two real factors, but they are also dangerous. The logic is no longer consequential; the logic of these systems is solely aimed at achieving objectives. For example, they might turn off the lights in a hospital to light up an intersection.”
Finally, Pope Leo XIV, a few days after his election to the papacy, explained the pontifical name he had chosen by drawing a parallel with Rerum Novarum, the encyclical by Pope Leo XIII that addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution. He now refers to today’s challenges, as we are experiencing another industrial revolution – one driven by technology and artificial intelligence.
In this context, where voices from representatives of the political, scientific and religious spheres are being raised, the American company Meta has introduced into the daily lives of millions of people an automatic update to the WhatsApp platform, bringing the possibility of a chatbot that enables direct interaction with artificial intelligence: Meta AI.
In the face of all this, it is our desire, once again, to share some of the revelations that have been given to us because we believe they can be a concrete help for these times. Our aim is not to take sides for or against AI, but, through these writings, to give everyone the opportunity to awaken and recover the human and divine nature that dwells within us, that we have as children of God and co-heirs of Christ.
We truly believe that it is by discovering the beauty, the genuineness and the freely available nature of the relationship with one another and with God that we can overcome the bitter loneliness that often gives rise to the need to choose AI as a colleague, friend, partner and, in some cases, even as a god.
It is also our priority to walk together as we face the challenge of Artificial Intelligence because we believe that “the Holy Spirit and us” will guide us to the whole truth, in which each of us is an instrument that perceives different nuances, based on our personal calling and life experience.
For this reason, we ask for your help and invite you to share your questions, doubts, and experiences regarding AI. You can do so by writing to the provided email addresses[5] or by calling us.[6] We will be truly grateful, as your input will help us better understand your needs and respond more effectively to reality. Not all of us are experts in AI, but we are all people who, in one way or another, come into contact with it.
We thank you, and we are certain that by living in the image and likeness of God, each individual and the entire humanity is guided through the many challenges that await us, including that of artificial intelligence.
Part II – God Listens and Understands
“My Dear Children,
Today I desire to tell you that GOD LISTENS AND UNDERSTANDS. He hears your prayers and understands your needs. But you must learn to pray in the right way. I explain to you how to pray: bring the problems and needs that worry you to God and leave them with Him; lay your sins and those of others at His feet. Ask God for help, but do not try to impose your solutions on Him. God has His own solutions, which are always better than yours. In every trial, first, ask God to help you understand what needs to be corrected within yourselves; there is always something to improve.
Then, put everything in His hands; let things happen, take them as they come and stop worrying. You will enter into the peace of God, and you will begin to see things in a new light. The Holy Spirit will inspire you with new purposes and fresh ideas; solutions will appear before your eyes with ease and without difficulty.
Be sure that God listens to the prayers of those who have faith. When you ask for God’s help with trust, He begins to help you in the very moment you turn to Him. Believe in what I say to you and your prayers will rise to Heaven and open the Heart of My Son. He will ask the Father for what is right for you, and the Father will give it to you in the power of the Holy Spirit.
I pray for you and bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”[7]
