In this journey, I will try to talk about the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity.

He is defined as the love that flows between the Father and the Son, the One who touches all creation, touches all mankind in every part of the Universe: He proceeds from the Father and the Son, travels incessantly through the Universe and touches everything and restores life to everything, bringing everything back to its original state.

He is the first gift of Jesus, the first gift given to believers. He is the One Jesus says: “When I am gone, he will explain everything to you.”[1] Everything that Jesus has sown, everything that has been placed in us since conception – the memory of God, His image, His likeness – everything is opened and explained by the Holy Spirit. He is the One who conceives Jesus in the womb of the Virgin Mary, His Spouse, Spouse of the Virgin Mary, Mary Most Holy. He is the wisdom of God, the One who, as Jesus always says, takes from the Father, takes from the Son and gives to every man, explains to every man.[2]

One could go on like this indefinitely, but the beauty of the Holy Trinity is immediately apparent: One cannot exist without the other, all have the same prerogatives, all are love: the Father who creates, Jesus who offers Himself, the Holy Spirit who sanctifies. They all love and love one another, but none of them can exist without the other; there we can see the beauty of true communion. And Mary Most Holy fits right into this vortex of love, because She too welcomes this love, welcomes the gift that comes to Her from the Holy Spirit, from God. She receives it and offers it again, She receives and gives it back to the Father. And so it is for anyone who enters into this dynamic of God, anyone who begins this journey from Baptism to return to God, to encounter God, because anyone who enters this journey offers himself to know God, to love Him and to serve Him. And that, too, is entirely the work of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus says, “You can do nothing without me[3], but even He, in order to accomplish the work of the Father, gives the Holy Spirit. Even He, in order to accomplish the work of the Father, acts in communion with the Holy Spirit. We too, if it were not for the Holy Spirit, would not even be able to say ‘Abba, Father’.

So, we can say that anyone who joyfully chooses to obey God is filled with the Holy Spirit, who then develops, recreates, transforms and expands. But in that desire to obey God, to be His, to want to know Him, to submit to His will – it is not enough to recognise God as Creator, we must also accept to be guided by Him – we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

He is the fire that burns away all impurity, He is the desire within us to belong to God, to be alive, to understand what is good, to desire what is good and to want to do it, towards God and towards our neighbour. Everything that is not done in this dimension, even if it is beautiful, lacks something, does not reach its fullness; even good deeds, if they are not the work of the Holy Spirit, will sooner or later come to an end, because He is the force, He is the One who instructs, He, as can be said of the whole Trinity, is life. Without the Holy Spirit, we are not alive.

We know from His gifts that He is the defender of the soul, the gentle host, the advocate; we also know that He is the One who prays in us. So, it seems to me that we need to understand clearly: He is a Person, and this helps us to understand Him and have a relationship with Him. He is a Person, and as such we must enter into communion with this Person. It is easier for us to do so with Jesus; with the Father we already take some steps, but we must also see the Holy Spirit in this way, precisely in order to learn to understand Him, learn to talk to Him, learn to have a relationship with Him, ask Him questions, listen to His answers.

I think we can conclude, so as not to write a treatise on the Holy Spirit, but in this Christmas season conclude by saying: we must learn to make room for the Holy Spirit, and we too must learn to diminish our ego, so that the Holy Spirit may increase within us. Then it will be easy for us to understand the Trinity, to understand Christmas, to understand Redemption, to understand this time of fulfilment, to understand that it is right for Jesus to return in glory to bring God’s plan to completion, and then to set out on the New Creation. Once again, everything comes back to this: it must start from a desire to enter the mind of God, and the Holy Spirit helps us in this.

May Mary Most Holy, His Bride, bless us on this journey, in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
